Approximately an hour and a half after the initial reports, the number of users reporting issues with Facebook had dropped to fewer than 80,000, according to Downdetector. Reports related to Instagram and Messenger also decreased significantly. However, it’s important to note that Downdetector only measures reports from users, so the actual number of affected individuals may be higher.

Meta announced the resolution of the issue just after noon Eastern Time, with Stone apologizing for any inconvenience caused by the outage. He clarified that the disruption was due to a technical issue and assured users that it was addressed promptly.

While major platform outages are relatively rare, they can occur due to benign causes such as software updates. In 2021, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp experienced a nearly six-hour outage, which the company confirmed was not due to malicious activity.

This recent service interruption comes shortly after AT&T’s nearly 12-hour network outage, reminding consumers of the potential impact of technical disruptions on their daily activities, including communication and internet access via mobile devices.
